After being a trucker for more than 20 years I felt that I had become quite an experienced driver and there were not a lot of circumstances in which I wasn’t used to driving. I’m not sure if it was complacency or a lack of focus but for my first time in around 20 years I had to make a claim through my truck insurance soon after an accident in my lorry caused by excessive winds. The moment I started driving it was obvious that the harsh weather was making it more difficult than usual, but I was not worried because i previously had driven in a lot more intense before. The journey was running nicely and I was making great time.
I was approaching the end of the journey and drawing near to a large round about (well known for accidents with high sided trucks nevertheless it did not faze me. As I got to around half way round I all of a sudden felt the lorry go. I attempted to compensate and I must have spun the steering wheel too powerfully as I started to snake over the lanes. I won’t tell a lie, I was truly worried. All of it went wrong so fast after which I recall lying on my side. My initial thoughts were those of horror and I was concerned that I might have hit another vehicle. Fortunately I was okay along with managed to free myself quickly from the truck. I checked all over and though cars had stopped on the roundabout, none were harmed and no one was injured. I felt a little shook up, but my feelings all of a sudden switched to embarrassment and anger. After the whole thing had calmed down and the truck was recovered I phoned my insurance broker who assisted me throughout the claims procedure.  It really was good to have someone to speak with who empathised with me and also was able to guide me throughout the claims procedure.
I’m currently back on the road and despite the fact I’m still frustrated with myself because of incident, I believe it’s just taught me to be an even better driver.
