We all know that the latest substantial winds have brought on chaos throughout the nation. We ourselves experienced a bit of exhilaration the other day in the office when a big sign went hurtling off of the side of the building because of the winds which flew across the car park damaging a co-workers car (thank heavens no one was injured and it wasn’t my car). Well having said exhilaration; it wasn’t exhilirating for the poor guy whose vehicle it had been and now is going to have an insurance claim to deal with. We had been working hard like every other day when all of a sudden I noticed some commotion and my colleagues rushing outside. Information soon passed round the office that a sign had blown off the side of the building and then hit an employee’s car. Naturally everyone needed to make sure it wasn’t their vehicle and have a bit of a look at the damage. We were all relieved to find out that nobody had been outside at the time as it could have been a lot worse. Turns out there was only one car involved and it was a colleague of mine. Not much could possibly be done right at that moment apart from detaching the problem sign and checking the others didn’t look like they were about to detatch themselves anytime soon. Even so, at lunch a good number of those who had left their cars near the building shifted their vehicles to try to stop the same thing happening again. Sensible idea really, I’m sure I would have done exactly the same. Later that day, I began to think about whether or not he would make a claim on his own car insurance or on the Office insurance or company’s Public Liability insurance. After I got home I spoke to my wife who works for a nearby insurance broker and I informed her what had happened at the office. I asked her whether or not my co-worker can claim on his car insurance or on the company’s insurance policy. She told me that either one would be fine, however to avoid affecting his no claims bonus, he must approach his employer who ought to have Public and Employer’s Liability insurance as part of their workplace policy. By doing this, she explained, the claim will be from the business because it’s their sign and so their responsibility.
